In summer, La Couronne goes into "seaside resort" mode on the Mediterranean coast called côte Bleue. The municipality is attached to the city of Martigues and is therefore part of the Bouches-du-Rhône, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Let's explore La Couronne's interests and summer life together.
La Couronne, a story related to stonemasons
The bell tower of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church is testament to the various stonemasons who contributed to its construction. Indeed, the village is characterized by a tradition of quarrymen (the "queyrouns"), who worked in the two local quarries.
The oldest, at the level of the cove of Couronne-Vieille that can be imagined thanks to the geometric shape of the seaside.
The last one at the Verdon cove, which is still used occasionally for the renovation of buildings in Marseille. This was the case recently, with the renovation of the Old Charity.
A seaside resort with several popular beaches
La Couronne is fortunate to have 4 beaches, which is exceptional in the Bouches-du-Rhône for a commune of this size (5,500 inhabitants).
The best known and also the largest, sheltered in a concave cove, is the beach of Verdon. Beautiful sandy beach of 300 meters and protected from the wind by a large cove, it is ideal for families, as it is supervised and landscaped with shops nearby. Choose staggered schedules to enjoy the calm.
The much smaller Couronne-Vieille beach (50 meters) is of sand and pebbles. It is very popular with snorkeling fans. It brings calm and serenity to its visitors on a picturesque site between old quarry and cliff, and offers a clear water that invites swimming... unsupervised.
The beach of La Saulce at the end of the coastal path of Martigues. It is a charming beach of fine golden sand, guarded in summer and with all the amenities, sanitary facilities, bars, restaurants...
Finally, the beach of Sainte-Croix "crowns" this list of the commune. Nice beach of golden and fine sand (100 meters), supervised in summer. Above the cove, the small chapel of Sainte-Croix seems to be watching the bathers. This beach has the advantage of being closest to our campsite (5 minutes of walk).
The village is served by the Blue Coast railway line. La Couronne-Carro station is limited to passenger shelters, the station having burned down in 1989 and having never been rebuilt by the SNCF.
